The Moon and the Tarot
"Before the voice can speak in the presence of the masters, it must have lost the power to wound." - Mabel Collins
"From the unreal, lead me to the Real,
from darkness, lead me to light,
from death, lead me to immortality." - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
The Moon represents the malleable and impressionable mind; being able to be shaped and bent by, not only, outside forces but our own indecisiveness and laziness, uncontrolled imagination and thoughtlessness. The Moon accepts everything passively. We can be lost in the subconscious. The moon reflects what is real. It is not reality or what is life giving and what really sustains. It is Maya-illusion, a reflection of truth and purity and light, hiding our full potential but showing us a glimmer of it.
All is not what it seems; it indicates deceptions and an inability to see things in their right light. We live in an age of deception and untruths, lies that are manipulated and/or moulded to form a semblance of truth, an appearance of truth, but not the actual truth.
By the use of will, courage and detached reflection- meditation, we can investigate and penetrate its mask. Remove the mask by the one pointed focus of Scorpio's gaze. It will reveal only a shadow, for we are living in a dream and ruled by a shadow.
This card represents midnight and the sign of Pisces, artistry and divinity hidden in emotional waywardness. There is hope. Divine essence (1) and Hope (17) = 18 (the Moon being the 18th Arcanum of the Tarot). The path although shaped like a crooked serpent is also the gateway of resurrection, an offer of a way back to truth and the pure light for those who use the mind wisely.
"There is a budding morrow in midnight." - Keats
This ancient divinatory science and art of the Tarot scales the barriers and breaks the bonds of our everyday perceptions and limitations; of time, space yet is deeply poignant to the age we live in. The ancients knew it to be a multi-layered and multi-dimensional portal, opening up and penetrating real dimension and character in people; Revealing the hidden meanings, truths and mysteries of life and the universe. It teaches us through profound prophetic allegory and through creative-intuitive understanding of the mind and soul; using specific keys (cards) that can reveal to us areas of the subconscious and unconscious we need to confront and transform, to celebrate and encourage, to stimulate and nurture; to examine positively the workings of our inner as well as outer life. A god-given device to aid us on our return journey home, exploring all aspects and potential of life and our being.
Today the real focus and revelation of the Tarot lies in a space poised vibrantly between intuition and the finer perceptions of the higher chakras; a place where the past and future meet the present in the now. The Christ-Shiva consciousness of Arjuna. Beware of history it can cloud truth. What we carry with us on our spiritual journey is history enough for us all to bear.
The Moon symbolizes our fall from grace; our deliberate merging with the illusory world of binaries. In the background we see either side, two towers. Between the towers is the snake like path of our existence. Of all the major Arcana, the Moon, the 18th is the most portentous, ominous and unfavourable. It shows the sorry and dangerous state that we can find ourselves in due only to our own indolence, stupidity and lack of inner vision.
On the path between the twin towers lies the sand of our blessed Earth showered by the many droplets of blood that we have shed throughout our history and our past and possibly, yet again in the future.
We shed blood and disregard precious life because of fabled Laws made by angry and bitter men, tyranny and ignorance. Blood is used in sacrificial ritual. We all should know of the Occult significance of this. It is our most vital Life-force energy. Jesus Christ willingly shed his lifeblood to help alleviate our racial Karma.
The Towers of nameless mystery, fear and horror dominate the background. In the foreground either side of the crooked paths entrance stands the dog and the wolf howling sadly, aimlessly at the Moon knowing of a great dissatisfaction but not knowing why. The wolf has always been our enemy, clearly and without doubt. And what the tragic life of the dog who only moments ago was affectionately laying at our feet calling itself our friend.
There are hidden and obvious enemies and false friends. Someone is tricking, deceiving us. We, like the crayfish or crab, are in retreat, and confused sitting in a pool of stagnant water. When water is putrefied nothing can live in it. Water symbolizes the emotions so here we are stuck with our painful and damaging emotions. At the mercy of this waning Moon as she sits in the dark night sky indifferent to our solitary cause.
We now have to move on, to search and try to reach for something much more real, more Spiritually tangible and lasting in our lives than we have ever found before. The Soul hungers for truth and spiritual sustenance. There is light at the end of the tunnel but we must use all our effort of will to transcend, reach up above and beyond this dream this Maya – Illusion, beyond what only a reflection can offer. To set our sights beyond the Moon, to extend our reach and embrace the Stars.

"Only the Eternal itself can aid you. No mortal thing can make you free. No books. No Masters. No religious rituals. It can only happen inside of your soul, if you only let it happen. Just be open in your meditations to the eternal." - Mabel Collins"An imprisoned person with no other book than the Tarot, if he knew how to use it, could in a few years acquire universal knowledge and would be able to speak on all subjects with unequalled learning and inexhaustible eloquence" - Eliphas Levi
